The buildings’ old pitched roof with its two small rooms and low ceiling attic areas was poorly suited for enlarging the living area of the house, so it was removed and replaced by a new construction on top of the old building. This was not an easy task, given the tight restrictions placed upon new building projects in this area by townscape protection laws. The architect managed to master the challenge in a very honest and convincing way: He refrained from masking the project as an attic extension and instead created a heterogeneous, yet fitting new ensemble by setting the modern new building structure atop the traditional old house.
